Metal window blinds are both sturdy and attractive. However, they are quite prone to collecting dust, and will need to be cleaned on a regular basis. Many try to clean their metal window blinds, only to find that they are not satisfied with the result. This is because certain steps need to be followed to ensure that these blinds are cleaned correctly. This is not a hard process, and once you know what to do, cleaning your blinds will be easy.

Depending on just how dusty your blinds are, it may be possible to clean them without taking them down. A light layer of dust can be removed by using your vacuum cleaner. You will need to use the hose of the vacuum, with one of the brush attachments placed on the end. Close the blinds, and proceed to remove as much dust as possible from the blinds themselves, as well as the top bracket.

When this is done, go back over the blinds with a gentle dust cloth. Cover each individual blind working from side to side, and top to bottom. Once you have completed these steps, step back and take a look. There is a good chance that you are done at this point. However, if you still see dust and dirt, you will need to take the cleaning process further.

You will need to remove the blinds, and clean them one at a time. The will need to be moved to your bathtub. Blinds can be soaked in a tub of water with a mild detergent, but since the water will get dirty quickly, you will have to change it out in between cleaning each of the metal window blinds. A more practical solution is to place the blind in the bottom of the tub, and turn on the shower head. Let the water wash off any loose dirt, and then using a rag or sponge with a mild detergent on it, wash each blind, and then rinse it.

When you are done with this, it is important to dry the blinds as much as possible. A towel should be fine for this task. You certainly do not want the blinds dripping onto your floor, carpet, or the window sill, so be as meticulous as possible. Once you are satisfied that they are dry, return them to the window, and move on to the next.

Metal window blinds should only need to actually be taken down and cleaned a few times of year. Dusting them on a regular basis with a dust rag will help prevent thick dust and dirt from settling, and keep you from having to wash them more frequently. If you live in one of the more dusty areas of the country, or if you like to open your windows frequently, you may need to dust quite often. If not, once, or twice a week will be enough to maintain their cleanliness, and prevent you from having to take then down and wash them very often.
